Celebrating ASEAN's 41st Anniversary through Sailing, One ASEAN at the Heart of a Dynamic Asia

  • Building a strong ASEAN community through sport
  • Celebrating 41 Years of ASEAN - One ASEAN at the Heart of a Dynamic Asia

Singapore 8 August, 2008 - ASEAN nations have come together for the inaugural 2008 ASEAN Sailing Day Celebrations

A total of 40 participants participated in a sailing trail and regatta along the straits of Johor and followed by a luncheon and cake cutting gathering at the SAF Yacht Club clubhouse in Sembawang. The event was supported by the Singapore Sports Council and the Neptune Orient Lines.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has evolved from a region of isolated states and cultures into a dynamic regional grouping that has raised cooperation and integration between nations at all levels of society, from economic, social and even sports. This year ASEAN celebrates her 41st Anniversary as a regional grouping and in Singapore, the sporting community took the celebrations as an opportunity to recognize the sporting achievement of the region, especially in the sport of sailing.

Sports have played a key role in efforts to integrate a diverse region. Sports is a social leveller has instilled a sense of identity and belonging to ASEAN in the lives of ordinary people regardless of race, language, religion, economic or social status or ability.

Under the framework of cooperation and partnership, ASEAN and the sport of Sailing have grown tremendously. ASEAN is increasingly playing a more regional and international role, uniting the region and giving ASEAN a greater presence in the world. Similarly in the sporting arena, ASEAN nations are ranked among the world’s best sailors.

The ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation (ADSF), together with the sailing fraternity organized the inaugural ASEAN Day Sailing Celebrations to recognize the pursuit of sailing excellence and solidarity among ASEAN nations and to celebrate the 41st Anniversary of the establishment of the grouping. ASEAN Day Sailing Celebrations highlighted the spirit of athleticism and solidarity and brought together citizens from all member countries together for a day of sport and togetherness.

Malaysia has kindly agreed to host the next ASEAN Day Sailing Celebrations in 2009.
